[ONLINE] Geography education that matters  in the twenty-second century

The word Geography is often associated with the study of space and boundaries in many societies. As a young teacher, I used to base my lessons on questions like “What is there?” and “What is elsewhere?” – a play on the idea of boundaries. However, geography is not just about physical boundaries and space, it also includes time, social phenomena and the cultural meanings attached to a place and the interaction between humans and their environment. The field of geography has evolved to address the issues in a rapidly changing world, with the emergence of new discourses like geographies of the Anthropocene, in response to our planet’s unprecedented rate, scale, and complexity of change. Given the high life expectancy in some countries, many babies born today will live into the twenty-second century. By examining the major discourses of geography education in the early decades of the twenty-first century, this talk will draw on research on geographical education published in some international journals on geographical education to discuss ideas about the implications for geography education in the twenty-second century.
