Abstract

Within many disciplines, the role and combination of photography and tourism, also during the era of web 2.0, have been examined. The circle of representation (Urry; Jenkins) has been established, tested, and reshaped in various studies. Since food and gastronomy play an important factor in tourism and have been at the forefront of reasons to visit certain places, it is especially interesting to have a look at food photography on social media. Instagram therein plays an important role before, during, and after the trip and has further been known as the social media most used for travel and food photography. Therefore by taking all these factors into account - a picture analysis will be used to examine the representation of Lisbon through food photography on certain (DMO) Instagram pages. The focus lies especially on two further questions: Is the circle of representation also recognizable and followed on Instagram concerning the presentation of food? And how is Lisbon presented through food photography on Instagram in general?
