From anger to action: How to oganise at your university and in your region

Abstract

The discussions on the proposal by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to refom the Temporary Employment in Higher Education-Act (dt.: Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) in spring 2023 have shown that political action by faculty staff, students and professors can create pressure on policy makers. Efforts to change the current system of higher education need to combine political action at federal, regional and local level. Participants in this workshop will discuss how to take forward claims to university management and regional governments to improve academic labour relations. With the support of an organising expert we start by introducing concepts of organising and illustrate how existing initiatives at German-speaking universities have implemented organising methods to build power locally and across university campuses. Participants will then discuss and develop tactics for the transfer of organising methods to their campus and region.
